A social security card comes with a unique 9-digit number to identify who you are. This number is required for reference by employers and many banks, insurance companies as well as the department of motor vehicles where you obtain driver's license. If you work long enough in the United States, you may be eligible for the retirement and other additional benefits that social security provides.
How to apply for a social security card?
You may call Social Security's toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, and ask for an application. There is no charge. You may also obtain this application at any Social Security office in the United States. If you are 18 years or older and have never had a Social Security number, you must go to a Social Security office in person to apply. The Application for a Social Security Card (SS-5) may be downloaded, by anyone who has never been issued a card, needs a replacement card or has changed his or her name.
